Can You Cancel GAMSTOP Early? What the Rules Say
No. Once a GAMSTOP Online registration is complete, the self-exclusion cannot be deactivated before the selected minimum exclusion period ends. The current options are six months, one year, five years, or five years with auto renewal.
This guide explains the official process without suggesting ways around the block. The practical choices during an active exclusion are to keep your details current, use extra blocking or support tools if needed, and decide near the end whether to extend the exclusion or request deactivation.
The short answer
GAMSTOP’s current Terms of Use state that a completed self-exclusion cannot be deactivated until the end of its minimum exclusion period. Registering creates a binding self-exclusion; changing your mind does not create an early-cancellation route.
That means the earliest point at which deactivation can begin depends on the option selected at registration:
- six months;
- one year;
- five years; or
- five years with auto renewal.
The minimum period is not the same as an automatic reopening date. When a non-renewing minimum period ends, the exclusion stays active until you complete the official deactivation process or extend it.
What happens while the minimum period is active
During the minimum exclusion period, GAMSTOP uses the registration information supplied to help participating gambling businesses identify and block matching accounts. The official terms ask users not to open new accounts, log in to existing accounts or try to circumvent the exclusion.
Keep your registration details accurate throughout the exclusion. You can update most details through your GAMSTOP account or contact the GAMSTOP Contact Centre. A name change requires contacting the centre. Current and previous phone numbers, email addresses and home addresses can matter because gambling accounts may have been registered using older details.
If money remains withdrawable in a gambling account, the operator—not GAMSTOP—is responsible for returning it. Contact the operator about the withdrawal process without asking for gambling access to be restored.

What happens when the minimum period ends
The end of a minimum period does not automatically remove the exclusion. GAMSTOP also says it does not contact users simply to announce that a minimum period has expired.
If auto renewal was not selected, there are two main choices after expiry:
- extend the exclusion for another six months, one year or five years; or
- contact the GAMSTOP Contact Centre and complete the deactivation process.
If you request deactivation, the current terms require a minimum 24-hour cooling-off period after the contact in which the request is made. The exclusion remains active during that time.
If no action is taken, the terms say the self-exclusion can continue for up to seven further years after the initial minimum period expires. It is therefore important not to assume that a calendar date alone has restored access.
How five-year auto renewal changes the process
Five years with auto renewal works differently. When the current five-year period ends, another five-year minimum exclusion period starts automatically.
The current terms say auto renewal can be turned off only during the final six months of an ongoing five-year minimum period. Turning it off prevents the next automatic period from starting; it does not immediately deactivate the current exclusion. After the current minimum period ends, the standard deactivation process still has to be completed.
Check the settings and dates shown in your GAMSTOP account rather than estimating them from memory. If anything is unclear, use the official contact route.
A practical checklist
Before acting near the end of a minimum period:
- sign in to the official GAMSTOP account and check the recorded period;
- confirm whether five-year auto renewal is enabled;
- update any changed contact or address details;
- decide whether extending the exclusion would be the safer choice;
- use the official Contact Centre if you want to discuss deactivation after expiry; and
- keep other protections in place while any deactivation request is being processed.
GAMSTOP is one layer of protection. Its official site also points to betting-shop self-exclusion, device-level blocking software and specialist support. Those options can remain useful whether the online exclusion is active, extended or later deactivated.
Avoid unofficial removal claims
Be cautious with any person, site or service claiming it can remove an active GAMSTOP exclusion early. The official rules do not provide a third-party shortcut. Do not share GAMSTOP login details, identity documents or payment information with a service making that promise.
Use only the official GAMSTOP website for account access and contact information. If you need to check whether a gambling business is licensed to serve customers in Great Britain, use the Gambling Commission public register.
