Can You Extend a GAMSTOP Exclusion? Renewal and Auto-Renewal Explained
Yes. You can extend a GAMSTOP self-exclusion, and a five-year exclusion can use an auto-renewal option. The important distinction is between the minimum exclusion period you chose and what happens after that period ends.
GAMSTOP does not automatically remove an exclusion at the end of the minimum period. If you take no action, the exclusion remains in place for up to a further seven years after the original minimum period expires. You can instead extend it for a new minimum period or, once eligible, complete the removal process.
This guide explains the current official process. It does not suggest testing whether gambling sites will let you in or trying to bypass a block.
The minimum exclusion periods
GAMSTOP currently offers minimum exclusion periods of:
- six months;
- one year;
- five years; or
- five years with auto-renewal.
You cannot shorten or cancel the selected minimum period early. GAMSTOP states that early removal is not available because the fixed period is part of the protection the service provides.
You can view your start date and minimum exclusion period by signing in to your GAMSTOP account. If you cannot access the account, use GAMSTOP’s official support channel rather than creating a second registration.
For more detail on the fixed period, see our guide to whether GAMSTOP can be cancelled early.
How to extend your GAMSTOP exclusion
GAMSTOP’s terms say that, when the minimum period expires, you may extend your self-exclusion through your online account or the GAMSTOP Contact Centre. A new minimum period can be six months, one year or five years.
Use the account or contact route listed on the official GAMSTOP website. The current contact page says its team can help with extending a block and lists webchat and phone support. Check the page directly for current opening hours and contact details rather than relying on an old article or saved number.
Before confirming an extension:
- sign in and check the recorded end date;
- review the available new minimum periods;
- decide whether five-year auto-renewal is appropriate;
- keep the confirmation that shows what you selected; and
- update genuine personal details so participating operators can continue matching your registration.
Do not change details to try to test the block. GAMSTOP explains that accurate, current details help make the exclusion effective.
What five-year auto-renewal does
The auto-renewal option was introduced in December 2024. Official GAMSTOP guidance says people who registered earlier can turn on auto-renewal or add a five-year period with auto-renewal through their account.
Under the current terms, a five-year exclusion with auto-renewal renews for further five-year periods unless you ask to turn auto-renewal off. Turning it off does not end the exclusion immediately. The active minimum period still has to expire, and the ordinary removal process applies if you then want the exclusion deactivated.
Auto-renewal is designed for someone who wants the block to continue without having to make a new decision at each five-year point. Keep your contact and identity details accurate, and review the confirmation in your own account for the exact status.
What happens when the minimum period expires?
GAMSTOP says it will not automatically remove your exclusion or contact you to announce that the minimum period has expired. Unless you chose auto-renewal, you then have three practical choices:
- extend the exclusion for six months, one year or five years;
- leave the exclusion in place without requesting removal; or
- ask to deactivate it through GAMSTOP’s removal process.
If you do nothing, the exclusion continues for up to a further seven years from the expiry of the initial minimum period. That continued status is not the same as selecting a new minimum period, but it means the block does not simply disappear on the date shown.
Our guide to how GAMSTOP works explains how participating Great Britain-licensed operators use registration details to identify excluded customers.
Can you remove GAMSTOP after the minimum period?
After the minimum period has expired, you may request removal through the process described by GAMSTOP. The current help guidance directs eligible users to sign in, select “Request Removal” and complete the process through online chat or phone.
Removal is not immediate. GAMSTOP’s terms require a minimum 24-hour cooling-off period after the removal contact is completed. The exclusion remains active during that period, and GAMSTOP says you can change your mind and cancel the removal request.
Do not treat the expiry date as permission to gamble or attempt logins while the exclusion is still active. Confirm the status through your GAMSTOP account. GAMSTOP also warns that operators may need time to update their records after the cooling-off period and that individual companies can keep their own account restrictions.
Extension versus doing nothing
Both choices can leave the exclusion active, but they are not identical.
Extending creates a new fixed minimum period that cannot be cancelled early. That may suit someone who wants a definite commitment and a clear future review point.
Doing nothing after expiry leaves the exclusion in place under GAMSTOP’s post-expiry rules for up to seven additional years, but it does not create a new six-month, one-year or five-year minimum period. If you want a defined renewed commitment, select an extension rather than relying only on inactivity.
For the most durable option currently described by GAMSTOP, review the five-year auto-renewal choice in your account.
Extra protection alongside GAMSTOP
GAMSTOP covers online gambling businesses licensed in Great Britain. It does not claim to cover every gambling website or every form of gambling. Extra barriers can help if you want broader protection.
GAMSTOP’s support pages point to options such as bank gambling blocks, blocking software, premises-based self-exclusion schemes and the National Gambling Helpline. These tools have different coverage, so confirm their current terms with the organisation providing them.
If a participating operator appears not to recognise an active exclusion, do not make a deposit to test it. Preserve the evidence and follow the steps in our guide to what to do when GAMSTOP appears not to be working.
A renewal checklist
Before the minimum period ends, or whenever you review your protection:
- sign in to confirm the start date, minimum period and current status;
- keep your name, address, date of birth, email and phone details accurate;
- decide whether you want a new fixed minimum period;
- review the five-year auto-renewal option;
- save the confirmation of any change; and
- add complementary blocks if GAMSTOP alone does not cover the risks you want to manage.
If you need help, use the contact details on GAMSTOP’s official site. Do not share account or identity information with an unofficial service that offers to extend or remove the exclusion for a fee.
Bottom line
You can extend a GAMSTOP exclusion for six months, one year or five years after the current minimum period expires. A five-year auto-renewal option can continue the exclusion in further five-year periods. If you do nothing after expiry, the block remains active for up to another seven years; it is not automatically removed.
Removal is only available after the minimum period and includes at least a 24-hour cooling-off period. Check your own account status and use GAMSTOP’s official support route for any change.
